Poki & Ember – “The Crank” at Oregon Country Fair 2009
Speaking of Poki… hey man, are you back from your european tour or are you still out wandering the ethos?
Ember & Poki perform The Crank at Oregon Country Fair 2009 as part of Splice.
Khan – freakyhijicky
Khan is one of my closest friends and I often consider him my consigliere. In this video he’s bustin out at least a half a dozen new techniques. I particularly like the sequence from about 1:25-1:30 and his isolation technique from 1:50-2:00. The isolation hoop technique into the Brecken pop is a nice detail. Also, I really appreciate the two point technique flips at 2:25-2:30. I haven’t seen those before.
Last time we he and I had lunch, talk of the next Flow Show started floating around. I can’t wait to see this incarnation.
Poki at PEX – Burning Man 2009
Hooping at Burning Man 2009 – The Download begins…
I’m still trying to get my head back on straight from my Burning Man experience. There was such much spinning goodness going on it was unbelievable. I’m not quite sure where to start the download but over the next week I’ll try and leave as much of it here as possible.
We’ll begin this all with some tech madness from Grimm in the Fire Idol contest at the Shiva Vista stage. Grimm has been investing himself in the translation of fire fan moves to mini hoops as demonstrated here. He’s spinning mini hoops with one fire wick suspended in the center by wire. I think the hoops grim is using are of his own design but Renegade jugglers manufacturers a similar product that Poki had a go with at Firedrums. Interesting design but I’m sticking to my Cosmic Fire minis with three spokes each.
Temple of Poi 2009 Fire Dancing Expo

So more on this later but I’m slowly shifting into more of a performance role with my hooping. I’ve been hooping intensely for two years and I have yet to do a performance. My first will be the Spinagogue Variety Show. My second performance will be the Temple of Poi 2009 Fire Dance Expo.
I know I have the technical skills and the performer in me is growing. Josh and I are practicing a lot right now (two or three 2 hr practices per week). Essentially I need to polish what I’m already doing into a stage worthy fire piece. That is more than just a little bit intimidating given the company we will be sharing the stage with. Some of my favorite spinners are performing and it is an honor to be able to participate in this event.
