Spin Matsuri – Japanese spinning festival

Is there a trip to Japan in my near future? I hope so.

Spin Matsuri is a celebration of movement and connection within Japan’s growing Hoop Dance and Spin communities. Dancers, instructors and free spirits from across the country and around the world will come together for three days to share, learn and create. Spin Matsuri is an inclusive event and welcomes all forms of expression through movement; from beginner hoop dancers to international spin stars!

Christabel on KFOG 6/2/09, The HOOPING Book!

Thank you Christabel for name dropping Khan, Bax and I in the interview. She’s beginning a radio tour promoting her new book Hooping! A Revolutionary Fitness Program. If your in SF, come by the Make-Out Room in the Mission District for her book opening party from 7-10pm tonight. Lauren and I will be there.

I was immediately comfortable and at ease with Renee and Peter (who had already done a segment on my classes in the past) as well as Greg, who was super welcoming. It was an unusual show because Renee, the host, has personally hooped many times before and is passionate about it already. She is fascinated by the more male styles and conceptually already understood the dynamism and grace in hooping as an art form. Neat way to start! This allowed some super juicey material to present itself rather fast in the interview, which had 15 whole minutes, as well as call-ins. Then suddenly, we were on air.

Malcolm Stewart – Male hoopers represent!

One of the biggest higlights of Hoop Convergence 2009 for me was Malcolm’s workshop. I actually did it twice because I was that enthused. Nearly every person in the workshop invented a move that they had never done before. Malcolm pushed us all to find new ways to move with the hoop. If you haven’t seen it before, check out his performance group, Color Wheel.

Rainbow Michael & Rich – PSI Hoop Patterns

Rainbow Michael and I had some fun drawing patterns with our PSI Hoops at Hoop Convergence. I love the spiro-graph patterns that emerge from antispin flowers. Photographs by Trish Stolte.

Overhand thread the needle to underhand thread the needle

This is sloppy as hell but the elements are all there. This is an overhand thread the needle crossover 180 to a underhand thread the needle. Khan showed me it with poi then he and I talked it through to the hoop version. It’s much harder with hoops than poi. I need to clean up my underhand thread the needle before this will look any good.

5 beat turns – Sharna Rose

These moves kick my ass and I love it! I got the 3-beat down. Then last weekend I finally got the underhand 3-beat down. I can now 180 from an underhand 3-beat to an overhand 3-beat. When I first got the underhand 3-beat I was literally jumping up and down with excitement. That one move took over a month of head scratching for me. So I also have an overhand 5-beat variation in the bag but these turns that Sharna is doing look wicked hard. This is going to take a while :)

From Sharna:

Not sure what else to call them really….They are Safires’s 5 beat weave, done exactly as described in the other vid clip and then you do a Lucian turn (I call this turn a Lucian turn because he inspired this move for me). Ideally you then continue to the other side and 5 beat it. On my left I got lazy with the 5 beat and was rolling/throwing the hoop instead of grabbing with one hand so this side is way messier. It really tires my brain this combo :-)

Bend a New Hula Mecca? One Can Only Hoop!

I’m just getting settled back in from a terrific weekend at the NorthWest Hoop Gathering. The event caught the attention of the local newspaper and yesterday we were on the cover of the local section of The Bulletin.

Hoopers learn how to spin a hoop with their hands during a diagrammatic hooping class taught by Rich Porter on Saturday at the Evolution of Flow Northwest Hoop Gathering at Summit High School. About 100 hoop enthusiasts from as far away as the United Kingdom are in Bend this weekend for the three-day hooping event.

Thank you Doug and Dara for opening your home to Khan, Philo and I. You made our stay in Bend so comfortable and relaxed. I can’t think of a better way to be hosted for such a packed weekend.

SaFire in the Sun

Wow. This is the first hooping video that made me tear up since Ann’s Sustained Stall video to Imogen Heap. I love how Sandra does several difficult moves that you don’t even notice because she does them so flawlessly. The one-handed helicopter?!? You’re not gonna see that one anywhere else folks and she has it polished to perfection. Her moves just express the freedom of her motion. Speechless.

BTW… She’ll be at the NorthWest Hoop Gathering. There are a few things I’m gonna get her to show me for sure.

More photos from the Gold Rush campout can be found here. Also, check out the Crush Mode Podcast from the Glitch Mob at Temporal Fusion. We rocked this mix several times throughout the weekend and it has some amazing tracks. I’m a sucker for the Glitch Mob and the Temporal Fusion Podcast is a gold mine of its own. I’m listening to the Dub Step Podcast from DJ Ale Fillman right now. Amazing!
