CAPs (Continuous Assembly Patterns)

caps
This has totally blown my mind and opened up a bunch of new doors for me. Last week after the Temple of Poi Fire Expo, Bax, Ann, Lauren, Khan, Tuana and a I headed over to the Vulcan for an afterparty. It was a packed house with everyone spinning as always over there. Brian of Code Red Circus Conspiracy had Greg demo a Continuous Assembly Pattern (CAPs) with Poi. It took only a few minutes before I had this extension/antispin pattern figured out. Rephrasing this as CAPs made me rethink some of the other moves I’m already doing. At FireDrums, Matt (also of Code Red) mentioned that you could do it Split Time Opposite with doubles and then you would be getting (sorta) into hybrids. I’m super excited by all the concepts happening in this motion. I’ll try and explain more over the next few days. I busted my video camera so I won’t be able to post video for a few days.

This video by Alien Jon shows what I think is a Split Time Opposite Extension/Antispin CAPs. If I’m wrong on this terminology, please let me know. I can do this with my mini hoops now cleanly. It’s actually not all that difficult.

Poppin all over the world…

Bend a New Hula Mecca? One Can Only Hoop!

I’m just getting settled back in from a terrific weekend at the NorthWest Hoop Gathering. The event caught the attention of the local newspaper and yesterday we were on the cover of the local section of The Bulletin.

Hoopers learn how to spin a hoop with their hands during a diagrammatic hooping class taught by Rich Porter on Saturday at the Evolution of Flow Northwest Hoop Gathering at Summit High School. About 100 hoop enthusiasts from as far away as the United Kingdom are in Bend this weekend for the three-day hooping event.

Thank you Doug and Dara for opening your home to Khan, Philo and I. You made our stay in Bend so comfortable and relaxed. I can’t think of a better way to be hosted for such a packed weekend.

Antispin Flower Diagram

I made this (and yesterday’s) diagram for the NorthWest Hoop Gathering. I’m hoping to have an 8.5″x11″ layout to give everyone that will include all of the moves and exercises we work on. So if you are coming to FLOW, you’ll see these diagrams again. My hope is that with a brief description, the diagrams will help people be able to reconnect with the moves. They also provide an additional modality for learning the move in the first place.

Antispin can be done in a full antispin flower, or the flower can be broken into pieces. This diagram demonstrates an antispin quadrant in each direction. I often do this back and fourth as a drill. Also notice that as with many of the moves I focus on, the hoop roles over the back of your hand while doing this and the arm remains straight throughout.

Pop.. slide… pop

This is demonstration of what I call Pop -Slide – Pop.

I call a “pop” any motion where you are moving the hoop, then suddenly isolate your hand, allowing the hoops momentum to carry it in a full rotation. Does that make any sense? A “slide” is just a hoop shifting in a straight line without rotating.

I also show split time double pop-slide-pop.
