It’s probably premature for me to announce this but it’s looking like we will have Siren spinning at our 2010 Burning Man Hoop Jam. One of my favorite DJs, his tracks are dope and his beats are heavy.

Dozens of 360º panoramic images of Burning Man 2009 have been posted here. Check them out. I haven’t located any clearly defined hoops but I bet they are there somewhere. I promise that within the fiery blur of the conclave there are many firehoops but I was hoping to see at least one definitively somewhere within the panoramas. I’m betting that someone else will comment on the exact location of a hoop ;)

I love so many people in these shots and the woman who took them. Thank you Marta! You can see the bags under my eyes from crying during the wedding, or maybe it’s just from being at Burning Man.

The shot below is hilarious. Taken outta context… could be quite confusing.

Hooping at Burning Man 2009 – The Download begins…

I’m still trying to get my head back on straight from my Burning Man experience. There was such much spinning goodness going on it was unbelievable. I’m not quite sure where to start the download but over the next week I’ll try and leave as much of it here as possible.

We’ll begin this all with some tech madness from Grimm in the Fire Idol contest at the Shiva Vista stage. Grimm has been investing himself in the translation of fire fan moves to mini hoops as demonstrated here. He’s spinning mini hoops with one fire wick suspended in the center by wire. I think the hoops grim is using are of his own design but Renegade jugglers manufacturers a similar product that Poki had a go with at Firedrums. Interesting design but I’m sticking to my Cosmic Fire minis with three spokes each.

Monday: Bridging Planes
The first class is an exercise in broadening the range of planar possibilities and accentuating the ones of your choosing. Designed initially to uncover horizontal/vertical transitions, it utilizes a somewhat visual holistic approach in creating a personal terrain for exploration that subverts the rigidness of the plane mentality, but allows for use of those planes when technical elements are applied.

Tuesday: Poise & Finesse
We can direct our breath toward forming channels to create lines as …let’s call them “emotional highways” for promoting elongation, lightness, and torque when it comes to the hoop. Pulling in to isolation techniques, it’s another method for expanding the range of focus, pairing explosive movements with more intimate ones and making everybody jealous. Several of the exercises are inspired by modern dance (a.k.a. you tube), but applied to hooping over a few months of trial and error. Time permitting, I’d like to tie it into the methods of the previous class and initiate the baddest hoop jam ever did doned. Teehee.
