Baxter core hoops (mostly) to “Night Falls” by Booka Shade

No introduction needed, here’s a new video from Bax… if you’re wanting tickets for his SF workshop, get them quick: here. He’s almost sold out, again :)

Booka Shade provides a sick hoop set. I love working on core hooping to it. If you like this track, you’ll probably like the whole album, “Movements.”

I never get tired of core hooping. That’s still my favorite way to hoop.

(For any HP out there, I was trying to keep a 2B2T emphasis.)

I’m teaching all over the place. Hit my website if you want to see where I’m headed. Well wishes to all who consider themselves part of the Hoop Community.

Bax Hoops to DangerMouse and Jemini “The Only One”

(2007) Jemini is a BAD ASS. So is Danger, but y’all already knew that. The song is “The Only One” off “Ghetto Pop Life…” The whole album kicks.

This video is one of the things that made me become a hooper. I still rotate this song in my practices because it get’s me so pumped up.

Ann – Summer Practice with Master Stevie Wonder

Here Ann goes again. This video is inspiring me to practice expressing more planes (and even the lack of a plane) in a shorter sequence of time. I’d swear Ann took Brecken’s workshop at Hoop Convergence on plane bridging as she’s definitely got it goin on.

Notice that she’s not rigorously aiming her performance toward the camera. If there were an audience around her, she would have aimed at almost everyone at some point. That’s easy enough to do by focusing toward one direction then the next sequentially but what I’m seeing evolve is style of moving that often aims in all directions. It gives a very different feel than the traditional sense of having a strict front and back.

For clarifications sake, everything I’m suggesting here applies predominantly to off body or angle hooping. It’s a little harder to fit on-body hooping into this planar model.

Hoop Path Retreat 2009 Photos – Day One

I’ll post more photos in the next few days as I find time to edit them. I had such a great time connecting with everyone and Carrboro is beautiful. Wow. More on the experience to come… I gotta get some sleep.

HoopPath Retreat Tickets are now onsale!

Next stop on my hooping tour this year, the Hoop Path Retreat in Carrboro, NC. This will be my first time to the Hoop Path Retreat but I’ve taken many classes with Baxter. I feels like I’ll be coming home to my people. Not to mention, I get to kick it with Brecken for several more days. This little bad ass blew my mind everyday at Hoop Convergence and absorbing more from her at the HP retreat will be a treat.

If you would like to attend the 2009 Retreat, June 18th-21st, please write to ann@hooppath.com. The price for the ENTIRE weekend is 150.00! This price includes all workshops and events, but does not include lodging and meals.

Last year we sold out in 8 days so I highly recommend purchasing your ticket as soon as possible!

Temple of Poi Fire Expo & The Flow Show

sik

Last night Khan, Shadjua and I had our final rehearsal for the Flow Show. The Flow Show will be taking place this Friday 7:00 PM at CounterPulse in San Francisco:

What happens when object manipulation is taken out of the circus, out of the dance club? This showcase will take the flow arts out of their typical settings and nobody really knows what will happen. Featuring flow artists on hoop, poi, staff, fans, balls and maybe some other stuff too.

I think we have our piece pretty well polished. All three of us are happy with the outcome. I snapped this shot of us at Margaret Jenkins Dance Lab on Saturday. I think I might be even more excited for this show if I could just sit back and watch all the amazing artists from around the world that will be performing. The list of performers is very impressive. Khan has done an amazing job creating this event.

double_mini_detailIn other news, I just received my second set of mini fire hoops from Cosmic Fire. The first pair were a prototype using HDPE plastic. The new design is a significant improvement and I can’t discern anything that I would change. The new mini firehoops are sweet! I love these little guys. The size allows them to be manipulated in ways very different from full size hoops. You can do staff like linear isolations, firefan moves translate well, they spin a lot like poi and move similar to knujmchucks. I’ve been having a lot of fun working them out for the Temple of Poi Fire Expo.

The Temple of Poi Fire Expo is almost here! The Fire Expo is the largest gathering of internationally renown fire dancing artists assembled in the western hemisphere for a free, legal public show! The show takes place in Union Square on Saturday night from 7:50 PM- 10:00 PM.
More info: here

Saturday morning Chris, Audree, Isa and I will be doing a fire demo on the KRON morning news. We’ll be doing this as promotion for the Saturday night Temple of Poi Fire Expo. I’m not looking forward to driving to the East Bay at 7 am on a Saturday but it should be fun and I’ll be doing it with close friends.

Baxter “Touch Technique”, MCP contact staff

This video demonstrates some cool new advancements in hoopdance techniques. Many who have taken one of Baxter’s classes will recognize this as a development on his point meditation exercises. Bax nails some incredible moves in this video, in particular check out 1:30 – 1:50. Most of the development in this video shows contact stalls, in the vein of sustained stalls, very meditative slow motions.

I’ve been playing with some “Touch Technique” taking inspiration from contact staff. I’ve been calling it contact hooping. Essentially I’m playing with off-body hooping without ever gripping the hoop, which is exactly what a lot of Bax’s video demonstrates. I have been focused exclusively on dynamic moves rather than stalls. Bax’s video demonstrates a whole new direction to take it.

If you haven’t witnessed MCP, check out the video below. If you look up “contact staff” on google, her website is the first thing you find and for good reason. I’d recommend checking out her website too http://mcp.tepookatoys.com/. I would love to see a technical hoop move website like MCP’s (Silverstar?, where ya at?)
