Love it :) Happy you’re home safe Rosie. Nice job on the vid! Inspiring.

Rosie has been one of my closest and most supportive friends for years now. When I first considered teaching a hoop workshop, Rosie was the first person I talked to about it. With nerves and trepidation I drove to consult with her at beautiful island sanctuary. When I first moved to SF, Rosie was the first person to invite Lauren and I to a social gathering, her Birthday party. It meant so much to us. That was so long ago now with so much water under the bridge (the bay bridge that is :) Thank you Rosie. You’re amazing.

We’ve suspected for some time that those fireball-on-a-stick Dolores Park Burners might not be native to Earth, what with our big buildings and fire codes and flammable clothing and all. We earthlings like our fires in pits and stoves — and when they’re on stages of any type, we keep extinguishers within reach. Firemaster Khan Wong and his Flow Show represent a different type of unearthly fire-dancer in “Portal: the Circlemakers.”

I was able to hop on stage twice at Floydfest with these amazing women. I’m actrually still here and writing from a little internet kiosk. Leah and Chloe are sisters, amazingly talented lyricists and musicians, and on top of that, they spin fire. On top of that, they might join us for the burn. We’ll see.

If your in the SF bay area, check out Tropo this weekend. These guys are amazing talented artists and great friends. If you’ve been to Hoop Camp, or Spin Cycle, Movement Play or many other hoop related events, Tropo is a big part of making it happen. I’d describe their music as electronic, in the vein of Rab, with live violin. They played Movement Play this Year, in the temple at LIB for a late night session, and they’re probably playing Hoop Camp this year too.

Life by TROPO

Originally as an artistic outlet beginning in early 2006, violinist Tyson Leonard commenced writing the music for TROPO after the demise of former group Rain Fur Rent. Jam sessions eventually mushroomed into a full collaboration between Tyson Leonard, Grant Leonard, And Ryan Johnson, also formerly of group Glider. Tyson’s soaring violin has been a California central coast club staple since the boys 1st traveled out from Boston 10 years ago. With his very unconventionally atmospheric pedal steel, Ryan creates sounds reminiscent of electronic ambient music. Grant sets grooves on bass guitar and Basstation synth laying the foundation with hard hitting drummer Jeff Schneider of Minneapolis and percussionist Trevor Mahin. Together these seasoned players create an electro edged rock set that travels through a myriad of emotionally charged dance tunes continuously raising the audience’s energy, sweat and all! The lyrics are conscientious and the message is uplifting! Tropo is a name that embodies the group’s music. “Going back to the origin… the wild.” The prefix TROPO suggests a state of change or environment for change. TROPO’s immediate goals include playing clubs up and down the west coast and performing at festivals such as High Sierra, Lightning In A Bottle, and the Joshua Tree Music Festival. Once again I’ll be doing a performance at the Monthly Rumpus on July 12th at The Make-Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, 7pm in San Francisco. My amazing friend Julie Greicius writes for the The Rumpus and has invited me to perform. She’s a gorgeous woman, a brilliant writer and a great hooper. It’s sorta funny to do this event without Ariane around. It’s almost like I’m hijacking her friends and scene. She used to write at a place called “The Groto” and spoke about Stephen Elliot and many of the others involved in The Rumpus. I hadn’t met some of the folks she often spoke about such as Stephen Elliot until after she’d already moved to New York. Being introduced to them later was a trip.

Last time I performed at the Monthly Rumpus, I got up and spoke about my hoop path for about ten minutes before performing. I’ll probably do the same thing. I like humanizing myself. I’m not just a hoop performer. Sure, I can perform, but I think my value is me, not just my hooping ability. With this crowd, if I just ran up there and hooped I’d feel like a go-go dancer, which I’m not. I’m not really sure how performing will fit into my future but as long as I’m getting a kick out of it, and that outweighs the cost, I’ll keep doing it.

I also feel a responsibility to perform. Me on-stage, being me, and being masculine, advertises the accessibility of this life changing tool to an audience that may not have realized it. It’s not for ego gratification, though that does exist. If I did this only for the ego boost, it wouldn’t be sustainable for me. Doing it fore a greater idea… allowing men to realize they can hoop, it’s not just for women… that’s what motivates me. Performing is a pain in the ass and pays terribly on the rare occasion that it pays.

I digress… regardless, come out and see the show. It’ll be a good time. The speaker’s last time were great. And I’ll be there bein me.

Such a great opportunity for us when we hooped on stage with DJ Icon on the main stage at Precompression at about 1:30 last Saturday. Revolva, Spiral and I killed it :) We’d already performed on the fire stage but getting up again was a treat.

Just back from Movement Play. Once again it changed my life. I can’t for next year. More to come.
