Hooopful Thinking by Stefana Serafina

I have to admit, when Stefana asked me to answer some questions, in my haste, I thought she was writing a college paper on hooping. Apparently I need to slow down reading my emails. Only later did I realize she was writing an article for the June Issue of Common Ground Magazine. She has quotes from Miss Rosie, Brecken, Christabel Zamor, Shakti Sunfire and others.

HOOOPful Thinking

Vau De Vire @ How Weird Faire 2010

Spontaneous sizzle real from the Vau De Vire Society. You’ll probably notice both Erin Schredder and Spiral. Nicely done.

The HoopLab on YouTube

The HoopLab channel on YouTube has 42 clips, featuring various hoopers (myself, Khan, Sharna Rose, Lucian, SaFire, Robb Mills and Grant’s even in there.) Each clip contains only one or two moves and although they’re not exactly “how-to” clips, most have slow motion demos. There is enough material here to practice for years.

HoopLab was an experiment that came and went, a small collective bound through a ning site, working to develop new moves and advance hooping.

Lewie West – Scrapbook

Talk about flow! More freestyle gymnastics from Lewie West. I have never seen anything like this before. I haven’t checked in on his youtube page in while but he’s still creating and posting amazing movement. The alternating one hand back springs?! He’s also bringing in martial arts, modern dance and probably more. Wow.

Photoshop these hoopers

Khan and Isa found this contest where people photoshopped the image of Spiral and I on the playa. WTF?! This is awesome, and totally confusing. People put some serious time into this and I have no idea who they are. Gotta love the internet. The original photo is by our friend Barry J Holmes.

Follow this link to Fark for more. There are 32 different versions.

Flowvision

Sean and Prisna have been hard at work creating dozens of videos for the modular flowtoys system. I’ve been honored to see much of their creative process. They are full on creating day and night all the time. One of their creations is “flowvision” demonstrated in this video. I was able to play with this system on a few occasions and witnessed some amazing spinners throw down in full fractal amazement. This thing is hypnotizing. I couldn’t turn away. And my face lit up every time I stepped in front of the camera an saw my movement creating patterns across the screen. It’s an impressive system. Sean and Prisna write:

FlowVision is an interactive, live visionary art piece designed by Flowtoys to inspire action, creative expression, meditation, wonder and play. Participants dance with light while real-time video effects amplify and elaborate their movements. The system has been fine tuned to bring out the magic in the Flow Arts.

In Progress: 8 House / BIG

8H – The 8-House from BIG on Vimeo.

This is a bit long, and not about hooping at all. BIG (the predessor of PLOT) is one of my favorite architecture firms. When I lived in Copenhagen this firm was the inspiration for the way I started thinking about architecture and even space for that matter. I still aspire to convey my concepts and intentions with the clarity that they achieve. I apply it to architecture and also to my approach to hooping. In this video they’ve taken their diagrammatic methods to a new level, incorporating interactive 3d rendering. This is next level stuff. Bjarke Ingels isn’t just an architect, this guy is performing here and he’s making himself a rockstar. I’m not sure if I think that’s great for architecture but I’m impressed regardless.
