Co-creating Reality – Shakti Sunfire

Everything is pointing me in the right direction. I just have to keep climbing. Another post from Shakti Sunfire’s writing on Elephant Journal.

I can taste the essence of what’s to come and it scares me and excites me both. On the plane ride back from the Hoop Convergence 2010 in a moment of melancholy reverie – the result of 4 days of little to no sleep, the return from the high of circular community – I wrote this down in my journal:

“I believe myself capable of great things.”

Dogpatch’s new trick: high fashion

In my day life, this is the project I’ve been managing. My responsibilities included design, drafting, code, permitting, coordinating with the contractors, owners, engineers, lighting designers, kitchen designer, etc. the project was recently mentioned in the SF Gate.

Dogpatch is going high fashion.

Chris and Ben Ospital, owners of Modern Appealing Clothing (MAC) in Hayes Valley, recently partnered with restaurateurs Margherita Stewart Sagan and Sheryl Rogat of Piccino to convert an 1840s stable house on 22nd Street and Minnesota into a destination spot for fashion-forward shoppers and those who

July’s Monthly Rumpus

Once again I’ll be doing a performance at the Monthly Rumpus on July 12th at The Make-Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, 7pm in San Francisco. My amazing friend Julie Greicius writes for the The Rumpus and has invited me to perform. She’s a gorgeous woman, a brilliant writer and a great hooper. It’s sorta funny to do this event without Ariane around. It’s almost like I’m hijacking her friends and scene. She used to write at a place called “The Groto” and spoke about Stephen Elliot and many of the others involved in The Rumpus. I hadn’t met some of the folks she often spoke about such as Stephen Elliot until after she’d already moved to New York. Being introduced to them later was a trip.

Last time I performed at the Monthly Rumpus, I got up and spoke about my hoop path for about ten minutes before performing. I’ll probably do the same thing. I like humanizing myself. I’m not just a hoop performer. Sure, I can perform, but I think my value is me, not just my hooping ability. With this crowd, if I just ran up there and hooped I’d feel like a go-go dancer, which I’m not. I’m not really sure how performing will fit into my future but as long as I’m getting a kick out of it, and that outweighs the cost, I’ll keep doing it.

I also feel a responsibility to perform. Me on-stage, being me, and being masculine, advertises the accessibility of this life changing tool to an audience that may not have realized it. It’s not for ego gratification, though that does exist. If I did this only for the ego boost, it wouldn’t be sustainable for me. Doing it fore a greater idea… allowing men to realize they can hoop, it’s not just for women… that’s what motivates me. Performing is a pain in the ass and pays terribly on the rare occasion that it pays.

I digress… regardless, come out and see the show. It’ll be a good time. The speaker’s last time were great. And I’ll be there bein me.

Rich at Burning Man Precompression 2010, with DJ Icon

Such a great opportunity for us when we hooped on stage with DJ Icon on the main stage at Precompression at about 1:30 last Saturday. Revolva, Spiral and I killed it :) We’d already performed on the fire stage but getting up again was a treat.

Just back from Movement Play. Once again it changed my life. I can’t for next year. More to come.

Tropo – Movement Play

Life by TROPO

If you didn’t know.. I have a boyfriend. His name is Grant. He taught me how to hoop (and let me know it’s alright to be a guy and hoop). In addition to his hoop skills, Grant is in an amazing band named Tropo. These guys are family. They build the Spin Cycle. And there some of the nicest most down to earth people you will ever meet. Tropo will definitely be rockin the Spin Cycle at Burning Man this year. Check out more of their tracks on Soundcloud.

They’re also headlining Movement Play Microfestival next weekend. Be there! If I had only one event to recommend each year, this would be it.

Onyx will be installing her new candle chandelier at Movement Play. We created an operating mechanism that will allow it to rotate this year. It’ll be gorgeous as always. She’ll also be debuting some of her recent one of clothing line. You can find our mor about Onyx’s Closet here.

“Enrepreneur State Of Mind ”
LYRICS:

Now Im in the blogosphere, Now I’m in the twitterverse
Fans get so immersed, But I’m a nerd forever
I’m the new Zuckerberg, And since my website
I been cookin dough like a chef servin killa-bytes
Used to be the basement, Back at my mom’s place
Buildin web traffic so that we could sell an ad space
Make way for the, One man businesses
Bail outs finished with, White collar criminals
New sega genesis, Entrepreneur time
Makin big plans, To dominate the online
Yeah, I’m on YouTube, this is one man
Sharin’ google revenue, With songs on my webcam
Science is the new art, Databases day to day
Geeks spreadin’ sheet smarts, Hustle, make the data pay
I could be in Valleywag plus Geekologie
Tell from my avatar, That I’m most definitely

The New Dork,
Social networks – what dreams are made of, There’s nothing you can’t do
Now you’re the New Dork
This V.C. money is brand new, The geek is now damn cool
Let’s hear it for new dorks, new dorks, new dorks

Catch me up in Techcrunch, Right on the homepage
Hell, I’m on Gizmodo, In a photo bout a phone craze
And Im up in Mashable, weekend trip to New York
Bar pitty, 1oak, parties full of New Dorks
Now I’m pitchin business plans, From the backs of napkans
Micro-lend to Africans, Monetize Kazakastan
Catch me up on linked-in, Dog, C.E.O.
You can see where I be, With the I.P.O.
Now I’m up in skinny jeans, Now a hipster’s lurkin’
Used to be a reject, But now I’m steady jerkin’
Now my glasses mainstream, Now the girlies eyein me
Popular kids copy me, The new swag is irony
Comin’ from the small time, Girls couldn’t find me
Now I scale models, Like I climb on top of Heidi
Start big trends, with tweets that I pass on
You should follow me, cuz I’m friends with Ashton
CHORUS

Shakti’s words…

I woke up angry this morning. That’s not like me at all. It’s been one of those days where I’m just wanting things to be easier… wanting the wind at my back. A minor revelation happened several times where I paused and said to myself, “cheer the fuck up.” But I resisted my better instincts instead choosing to indulge in my bitterness. For me the experience was similar to listening to sad love songs after a break up, an indulgence that only makes things worse. Why linger in the dark?

I needed something to snap me out of my funk. The first thing that sprang to my mind was Shakti. Her written words always feel like they were written to me saying exactly what I need to hear, exactly when I need to hear it. The first article I found was her recent elephant journal post and sure enough, it was perfect. Still pulling myself out of the hole but at least now I’m inspired.

We each have the opportunity to define our perception. I chose light while acknowledging the dark. (Okay… not really… I usually just run around with my head stuck in the clouds and a silly grin on my face.)

From Elephant Journal:

My mom years ago explained to me the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness she described, is a transitory state of mind that is entirely contingent on external circumstance. (i.e. I’m eating a cookie and it makes me happy). Joy asks us to take a step back from the whim of our knee jerk emotional reactions to see the greater picture and thus find joy trust and comfort on the path of life. (i.e. I would rather my daughter be a lawyer than a circus performer but I find joy in knowing she’s following her heart). At the time this distinction was revolutionary.

Spin Cycle Spin Jam – Burningman 2010

It’s probably premature for me to announce this but it’s looking like we will have Siren spinning at our 2010 Burning Man Hoop Jam. One of my favorite DJs, his tracks are dope and his beats are heavy.

Summertime in Oakland (Album Version) by Siren Music

We’ll most likely host one more DJ as well. We have big things in mind. Keep your fingers crossed. Tentatively the jamb is set for Thursday from 5-7pm. Hell yes :)

Grab Siren’s brand new album, “Jingletown” on addictech here.

‘Jingletown’ is a name given to a ghetto neighborhood on the south side of Oakland where cultures collide. Home to some of the best Burritos in the Bay Area, some of the most hyped of the Hyphy Hip Hop scene and some scary street sideshows. On ‘Jingletown’ , Siren delves into the sound and energy of the neighborhood. The ecstatic enjoyment of good tunes in a lowrider on the sunny day, is ‘Summertime In Oakland’,

Getting excited for it all watching Lucian’s amazing video of last years jam with Cheb I Sabbah and Mighty Dub Killaz. I haven’t asked Janaka yet but there’s a good chance MDK will be back at some point as well.
