MLK/MJ MASHUP – w/pied piper and BK2 – Beats Antique

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, I’m taking the afternoon off work to go work on the DVD and posting this mash-up done by Beat’s Antique of MLK and Michael Jackson. The tracks is far more relevant today than when they first produced it. I think it came out even before MJ’s passing. Oddly prophetic in retrospect.

You can download the free track: here
Also, the track is the soundtrack to the video posted below.

Our DVD editor, Robb Pope, just signed up to do some editing for Beat’s Antique. I’m excited to see what comes of that project.

A public service announcement from Rich:
The font they use at the beginning of this video clip is called Bleeding Cowboy. Listen people…. this font is OFFICIALLY PLAYED OUT! Please refrain from using this font in any future graphic design projects. I used it myself last year for the Gold Rush Campout and loved it. Having used it myself, I became acutely aware of how over used it has become. Let it rest people. Please.

Nosaj Thing x Drake x The xx (MP3)

This track was just posted on Urb.com. Original post: here

Nosaj Thing is amazing producer who’s recent album has topped charts. Although I find it a little dry and undanceable I still have an academic appreciation for most of their work . There remixes however, make me wanna move.

Make it to the end of the first track for a cameo by Eminem. I’d love to dislike Eminem but I just can’t. The guy has skills. The second track is hauntingly beautiful and reminds me of my favorite track of 2009.

When one of LA’s hottest producers picks up tracks by hip-hop’s reigning prince and indie’s love-torn darlings, only good things will come of it. Here Nosaj Thing remixes Drake’s “Forever” and The xx’s “Islands,” which, in a few words, sound like he sprinkled stardust on the tracks and this “Islands” remix is infinitely better than the original. Commitment

HOOP PAINTING! from katherine blackburne on Vimeo.

Combining two passions, completing the circle.

Hooping/ Painting/ Film : Katherine Blackburne
Concept : Stefan Pildes

Music : “Gimme Something True” Basement Jaxx

Commitment is a beautiful thing. It’s so much easier to half ass just about anything. It takes a leap of faith and even more importantly, an exposing of vulnerability to fully commit to any creative act. It’s the only way to create anything of value though.

When we hoop… we can do a move… or we can DO A MOVE. Breakdancers are the first example popping to my mind. If you haven’t seen “Planet B-Boy“, rush to go see that film. Every movement is fully committed. That’s what makes them so exceptional.

You can see that ever so clearly with hoopers. I think we often fear fully committing to a move because it requires the acceptance of exposing the limit of our ability. If I show you the best of myself then you have the position of knowing my limit. I’ve shown you my edge.

This is the most powerful act we can share and the path to creating powerful poetic moments.

Now this is off topic for Isopop.com but it’s pretty clever. So here it is, First Person Tetris. Thanks Brock for posting this.

How to be a creative intelligent hooper…

This was a series of thoughts I tweeted inspired by Brian Andreas‘s posts on “how to live or manage a creative person.”

I haven’t really figured out what makes a smart creative hooper, but here it goes anyway:
4:26 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #1: Avoid what’s expected… leg warmers… skimpy outfits… tada moves… do these things sparingly.
4:28 AM Jan 9th from web

Note on #1: These things were designed for maximum impact with least actual input. See it done 1000 times and it gets dull.
4:29 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #2: Do things that are blatantly boring to anyone accept yourself. Do it for months while others laugh. Something unique will arise.
4:39 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #3: Take inspiration from sources outside the hoop world. This avoids incestuous habits.
4:50 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #4: Get lost in the music not the audience.
4:52 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #5: Critique and accept criticism. Avoidance of critique is akin to apathy. As a community we avoid critique like the plague.
5:00 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip # 6: Try hooping under the influence. Just don’t do it all the time. Sometimes it can open doors you had overlooked.
5:46 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #7:Ignore everybody. The more unique your process is the less value anyone else will be able to contribute. I stole this from H.Macleod.
5:49 AM Jan 9th from web

Tip #8: Never confuse a pat on the back with a spiritual reward. You can potentially gain far greater than approval.
2:45 PM Jan 9th from Echofon

Tip #9: play with the variables. Hoop alone. Hoop in a group. Hoop to fast music. Hoop to slow music. Hoop on a street corner. Hoop naked.
2:52 PM Jan 9th from Echofon

Tip #10: Find someone who inspires you. Don’t emulate but try and figure out what motivates them.
3:44 AM Jan 10th from Echofon

Another thought on #1: unless its authentic, it’s often an attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

WiSeLy – MiGhTy DuB KiLLaZ

A new music video by Janaka Selekta & JC Stokes, aka. Papa Roads. Together they are known as Mighty Dub Killaz. I’ve been excited for this video to be released. Janaka is the drummer you see at the beginning. They create the music together: JC the lyricists, Janaka the composer. The first close-up of the female dancer outside (1:31) is one of Lauren and I’s oldest and dearest friends, Saba and they are dancing and perfroming outside our friend Sha’s restaurant in Lower Haight, Rotee.

Fever Ray – When I Grow Up (Bassnectar Remix)

Fever Ray – When I Grow Up (Bassnectar Remix) Preview  by  Bassnectar

I heard this for the first time at Symbiosis a few months ago. It’s an amazing track. Let it get going. The flavor totally changes after about a minute and a half. If you click through to Soundcloud you can download the actual track.

Pure Brecken Badassery… A Week in Review …

Damn yo. This is some more insanity from Brecken. Girls got skills. Pure 3d style hooping. Gotta love it.

Hoop City

HoopCity.ca – Hooping Community

Hoop City is poppin off. It’s really starting to have the feel that tribe used too. I have to say, as I become more active over there, I’m becoming more and more impressed.
