Commitment is a beautiful thing. It’s so much easier to half ass just about anything. It takes a leap of faith and even more importantly, an exposing of vulnerability to fully commit to any creative act. It’s the only way to create anything of value though.

When we hoop… we can do a move… or we can DO A MOVE. Breakdancers are the first example popping to my mind. If you haven’t seen “Planet B-Boy“, rush to go see that film. Every movement is fully committed. That’s what makes them so exceptional.

You can see that ever so clearly with hoopers. I think we often fear fully committing to a move because it requires the acceptance of exposing the limit of our ability. If I show you the best of myself then you have the position of knowing my limit. I’ve shown you my edge.

This is the most powerful act we can share and the path to creating powerful poetic moments.

so funny you talk about this. i was in a class last night and I had a new student – never met her before. she was doing the move but kept not following through. so i walked up to her and I said, “do you struggle with following through in your life?” and she looked and me and said yes. We had a little talk about her committing. it was great. and useful, and profound for her. she could see how the (flow) practice was useful for her life (practice). it’s so clear to me that we can often see how we are and are not being through our practice. i love this. :)

What an excellent video and very good points about commitment, both by Rich and Isa. I’ve definitely noticed a change in my level of commitment to life and hooping since I started. There are still plenty of moments when I won’t take that chance, duck my head out, for fear of the hoop flying off my shoulder and into someone’s face or very expensive ming vase.

ha! fearlessness doesn’t mean lack of prudence, so i’m all for you taking care of people’s heads and ming vases Jessica! :)
