Hollistic Hoop – LED Shoot with Dai Zaobab.

Dai showed me this shots on the back of his camera at Symbiosis and I was amazed. These were taken using an LED hoop from Hollistic Hoops. Dai is one of the most entertaining spinners I have ever met as well as having an unbelievable amount of technical skill. Some of the mini hoop tricks that I play with came out of a long night at the vulcan translating buugeng to mini hoop with Dai.

Symbiosis – DJ Drez

Drez

Just home from Symbiosis Gatherings. This was a unique and spectacular event. The amount of artwork and stage infrastructure for a medium size festival was staggering. I have not been to a Burning Man culture festival with this level of production before.

One of the highlights of the whole event for me was Saturday night. Having heard they were playing hip-hop at the Forest stage Spiral, Lauren and I headed down. The dance floor was packed. This was the first time I have heard DJ Drez but his set was sick! I turned around for one minute and somehow Spiral had worked her magic and landed on stage. The music was hot and she was on fire. It was one of the best hoop performances I have ever seen. It was easily apparent that she was very inspired and caught by the music.

I’ve been home for only an hour and have already purchased the album. Check it out on iTunes: here

ElectroCircus Hoopers Jamming in Austin, TX

Thank you Lucian for turning me onto this vid. It may have my hoopie vote for hooping video of the year. Beautifully shot and edited with mad hoop skillz to boot. This captures much of the essence of what makes me hoop.

ElectroCircus is the energetic magnetism of beautiful people getting kinetic in Austin, Texas. The event is born from the C.U.@Circus group that meets outside of Barton Springs every Sunday.

The song is by the artist GLU, and is a short sample of a circus elephant being freed–all the beats, melody, and layers are created from this single organic sample.

Kanye West can’t touch Nicholas Longuechaud

A new installation from the french isolation genius, Nicholas Longuechaud. He’s calling it Pacman style which seems to make sense.

Dong-A Dance Festival 2008,South Korea

I found this video via Mcp via Maelle.

Amazing! God, I wish I could bring this much emotion and fluidity into my hoop dance. The dancer, Suntae Lee, illustrate a healthy infusion of narrative into the movements while keeping the focus on the dance, not the story. I think I should spend a night in a dance studio replicating his movements (with no hoop). It’s strangely masculine given how delicate some of the motions are. I need to watch more dance videos! The more we pull from and the more we cross pollinate, the further we’ll advance hoop dance.

Hooping at Burning Man 2009 – The Download begins…

I’m still trying to get my head back on straight from my Burning Man experience. There was such much spinning goodness going on it was unbelievable. I’m not quite sure where to start the download but over the next week I’ll try and leave as much of it here as possible.

We’ll begin this all with some tech madness from Grimm in the Fire Idol contest at the Shiva Vista stage. Grimm has been investing himself in the translation of fire fan moves to mini hoops as demonstrated here. He’s spinning mini hoops with one fire wick suspended in the center by wire. I think the hoops grim is using are of his own design but Renegade jugglers manufacturers a similar product that Poki had a go with at Firedrums. Interesting design but I’m sticking to my Cosmic Fire minis with three spokes each.
