Movement play 2009 – Chris Williams performs double fire staff

Chris is one of my best friends, maybe more like a brother. He introduced Lauren and I to spinning and actually reintroduced us to the outdoors. I’d also say the reason I’ve tried to incorporate so much tech stuff into my hooping was because for the first year I hooped, Chris was there nearly every time I hooped throwin down beautiful dance with sick technical moves. Lauren thinks when I’m at my best I move a little like Chris and I’d say that’s probably true. This performance was perfect!

I’ve rarely seen a staff of poi performer who incorporated so many technical moves while making it accessible for the audience. You often see high brow tech spinners who spin for other spinners, or dumbed down spinning for the audience. It’s a thing of beauty when someone can do both and my highest aspiration.

“To all who love Elias,

Elias mother here. Among Elias’ friends are a few people who have contacted psychics about Elias and several of them are giving me reason to hope that Elias is alive – but he is in danger. They think that he has been taken by some people, probably two men and a woman, and that they are in over their heads, are unstable and irrational, and do not know what to do at this point.

One of these psychics – and I was assured she had not been given this information – said that Elias has three women’s names on his mind. Those names are Anna, Marie and Nina. Those are me and his two sisters. If this psychic could see this, it gives me a lot of hope.

I am asking everyone, PLEASE, send thoughts of love and forgiveness to these people, that their negative energy may dissolve and they may see a way out and listen to their conscience and not do anything rash.

It is very important to gather yourselves, and find your deepest wisdom for this. It is counterintuitive – but do not send anger their way. Send love, send calm, and send forgiveness.

Last night, Anna had a very special experience that she would like to share with those who love and care for him. The following is her writing about that experience:

—A PSYCHIC TRANSMISSION FROM ELIJAH—

Elias has been in psychic contact on a spirit-soul level with a woman who knows him and I am going to transmit to everyone what he has said. I have decided that we will all call him Elijah now. She was not paid. She said she is doing this as a service to humanity and she loved Elias. She contacted him last night after our prayer vigil.. She says she has been in contact with him ever since she heard about this, but he was scattered like “shards of glass.” He had to process a lot of darkness. But, last night, she says, she was able to get a clear communication with him for several hours, and again while we were on the phone. Last night he said, “the prayers helped me.” For those who don’t know, we had a powerful prayer and guided meditation vigil last night, which she knew nothing about. And, I also said last night that Elijah was born into this world for a purpose, and that purpose is to teach love to humanity. So imagine getting this transmission today:

Elias says repeatedly that what happened was like an unfortunate accident. It shouldn’t have happened. The person involved needs compassion.

Elias is adamant that he wants everyone to react with love and compassion. He wants a circle of people, whoever is capable, to hold space at the same time every day for compassion meditation and to let him know what time that will be so that he can join us.

He does not want so much energy put on what happened. Put energy into love and compassion. People are digging, he says, seeking with too much frustration to find out what happened. Surrender and allow it to be revealed. Taking action is good, but don’t focus too much on seeking. [It is clear he is not against our search, but wants us to remain in control of our attitudes.]

The risks he may have taken have nothing to do with what happened. Extra drama can be created by grabbing at facts about his life, but isn’t needed. This can lead to people accusing each other. People should not dive in where it isn’t needed.

He says that this whole event is a lesson. He wants us to learn the lesson! If we focus on the wrong things we may not learn the lesson. The lesson is about love.

All will be revealed. We must be patient. Be present with love and compassion. If we allow the truth to appear in an authentic way, it allows things to shift. He wants there to be complete forgiveness.

He wanted to let me know how much he loves me, that I touch his soul and that I was a wonderful goddess to come through. At this point he made the psychic look at roses in her garden!

He is grateful that I am open to allowing this lesson to be learned through me. There should be no vindictiveness. He wants us to show love for all – not just him.

[I said, I am going to write all this down and put it on the internet for everyone!]

Speak from your heart, Mom. Write like a Sufi, and be my muse. Be my instrument. A lute. Start it with a Sufi poem. You will find the perfect poem. [But I will end with it instead.]

[I said, I don’t want him to feel guilty for taking risks that might have allowed this to happen].
He said he does not feel guilty but he has had some frustration about attachments to do certain things, but it doesn’t matter.

[Is he giving up?] He isn’t giving up on anything!

It was ridiculous. It shouldn’t have happened but it happened for the lesson. It was necessary for it to happen. Sometimes we have to be taught extreme lessons. We can read books but not really understand.

Elias wants us to proceed with compassion every step of the way. Use less intellect. Keep returning to the love or we will miss the lesson.

Emotions need to be released, to be honored and allow them to flow through like a stream, but don’t let them constrict you. So the key is to honor your emotions without holding them inside.

He wants to raise the vibration.

Have compassion on someone who may have had an accident with Elias.

He wants me to nurture myself and be his muse. [Should I hang up now and go write this?]

Go find a poem and write from your heart.

And a final reminder about the compassion circle.

Ann – Summer Practice with Master Stevie Wonder

Here Ann goes again. This video is inspiring me to practice expressing more planes (and even the lack of a plane) in a shorter sequence of time. I’d swear Ann took Brecken’s workshop at Hoop Convergence on plane bridging as she’s definitely got it goin on.

Notice that she’s not rigorously aiming her performance toward the camera. If there were an audience around her, she would have aimed at almost everyone at some point. That’s easy enough to do by focusing toward one direction then the next sequentially but what I’m seeing evolve is style of moving that often aims in all directions. It gives a very different feel than the traditional sense of having a strict front and back.

For clarifications sake, everything I’m suggesting here applies predominantly to off body or angle hooping. It’s a little harder to fit on-body hooping into this planar model.

This blog entry is a little experiment to see if I can make the first page of a google search for the name “Rich Porter”. If you can link to this entry, it will bump me up in the google rankings.So I’ve found that when I post a blog entry with something in the title, it tends to rank pretty high on google. I’ve always been bothered by the fact that when I look up “Rich Porter”, the main thing I get back is a notorious New York City drug kingpins who was shot and killed in 1990. You can imagine my shock the first time I heard my name in a 50 cent track on the radio (lyric’s here).

plane wrecka

This is my favorite installation of NoelTech yet and it’s a mind bender for sure. The kinesthetic intelligence demonstrated by G in this video is hard for me to wrap my head around. All that I can say is damn…

Plane breaking can happen with a hoop. There was a time, say last Burning Man and before, when I didn’t appreciate the aesthetic of plane breaking with a hoop. I even talked at length one night about it with Bax, who firmly disagreed despite his own propensity to stay in plane. Because I held firm beliefs that plane breaking was a no-no, I didn’t do it.

Then I saw Brecken hoop and she went and wrecked all my rules. She popped my bubble. She breaks planes like it’s the way to hoop and she makes it look damn good… Brecken the plane wrecka… Seeing the plane structure I had imposed melt before my eyes opened up a ton of new moves. As opposed to the 2d planar style hooping that I predominantly do, plane wrecking opens up 3d shapes. In addition to Brecken, Michelle and Kuhunahula are two of my favorite hoopers who break plane a lot.

One thing I feel compelled to say about plane wrecking is that it can easily look like slop if you don’t have precision. I’m working hard to break planes quickly then stop the hoop precisely into another plane. I think that’s what G demonstrates so elegantly in the video here.

Movement Play – “The Show Off Show”

At Movement Play on Saturday we had “The Show Off Show”. I’m not sure if I wanted to participate or if it preferred to be a passive observer but Rosie asked me to do it and I was easily swayed. I was ambivalent about performing but a little nudge and I was on board.

Apprehensively, I signed myself up on the little clip board. My apprehension stemming from the insane level of talent that had participated the year before. This talent show was not not your average talent show; nearly all the participants were professional performers sharing their skill. On top of that, I’m at a “micro-festival”, as Rosie likes to call it, full of hoopers. I had the feeling that me hooping for hoopers at a talent show, at a hoop festival was just a little arrogant and performing for Anah, Christabel, Rosie, Jasmine, Dawn, Jamie and many of the other hoopers that I hold in high regards, always ups the anxiety level. Despite that, Anah and Rosie performing helped me give myself the permission to put all the internal dialogue aside and I went for it.

Then I had to decide what to perform with?!? One full-size hoop? Double minis? Double mini fire hoops? The obvious choice seemed a full size single and demoing all the isopop stuff. I know others love to see that but I feel it would be limiting to continue performing that realm of movements all the time. I’ve been very into my double mini’s lately, especially the moves I call “unified axial isolations”. I want to share that stuff. I’m also really into these linear isolations that I can’t do very well but conceptually excite me. Then again…. I could firehoop. Crowds love fire. It’s a crowd pleaser every-time. It’s not my passion though. In the end, I decided to start with double minis for the first two minutes, then move on to a single hoop.

I chose one of my favorite tracks, Cockney Violin by Caspa. It’s an older track with an asian violin and heavy dub baseline, perfection if I’ve ever heard it. It’s melodic with the whomp that makes me move with passion.

As it came time to perform, I warmed up outside the performance area. I’ve recently found that I perform best when I keep my mind completely off the fact that I’m going to be performing. I ignore all aspects other than knowing when I go on. This time, the order got switched up and Rosie called me up one act ahead of time. It actually worked well for me because I had no time for nerves. I yanked my shirt off and ran on stage, having not even planned the exact placement of my hoops for the transition from doubles to single.

As I stepped on stage, my hooping went into autopilot. I’ve repeated every single motion 1000′s of times now. It feels funny that on stage I felt no flow and I almost didn’t feel the hoop. I was aware of the audience and that I was guiding the motion of the hoop. The intricacies of the moves disappeared completely. I’ve heard people talk about how they channel a higher energy while performing. This is the closest I’ve come to that feeling though autopilot is a more exact description of my experience.

When I stepped off stage I didn’t really know how the hooping went. I was aware that I had evoked a strong audience reaction and that I pulled everything off but it all felt mildly disconnected. I immediately went to Lauren. Lauren always holds the outside perspective for me. Without her, I couldn’t do anything. So when she said I nailed the performance I knew it went well. Lauren said the performance was the best she’d ever seen me do. Christabel and others said the same.

It was surreal and exciting experience. Each new performance gives me new insight to what it means and what it takes to perform. I always feel an indebtedness to my audience for them allowing me to perfrom and I strive to live up to that. I’m stoked that this time I did.
