World Hoop Day – Map yourself

I just found this map on the World Hoop Day website. I’m always a sucker for graphic means of representing information. Let’s see how many hoopers we can on the map!

Hoop Convergence – PSIhoops

Nicole Farley got some great shots of Rainbow Michael, Shakti, and I PSI hooping at Hoop Convergence. All three of us were spinning hand made LED hoops from PSIhoops. Thank you Nicole for these great pictures! Entire set can be found here: flickr

Sharna Rose – Continual horizontal neck duck outs

I can tell you from trying, this move is at least as hard as it looks. The front crossover is unbelievably difficult but here Sharna is, going at it as always. I can’t help but love her : )

One day this will be really smooth and go for longer but for now I’ve got three full rotations down, to get it in flow is my next objective as well as making it smooth and great to look at. If I look out I always f*** it up : -)

A.M. Architect – The Road To The Sun

m_35b21742a8f94777af84eccff5d33952

I’m stumbling across some great music lately. I found these guys through the XLR8R. There is a free download of a great track available here.

The core of A.M. Architect’s inviting sound—laid-back, hip-hop-inflected beats paired with Fender Rhodes melodies, acoustic and electric guitar shadings, and an occasional sample—speaks volumes about its appeal. Though it may be a side project for Diego Chavez (aka Aether216) and Daniel Stanush (aka Magic Note, lead guitarist for the Panic Division), there’s nothing half-assed about the dozen fresh cuts that compose The Road to the Sun. Think fifty-two minutes of warm, organic tunes succulently supplemented with pedal steel, cello, field samples, synthesizers, electric piano, and drums and you’re in the right ballpark. That there’s no “deep meaning” to be gleaned from the set isn’t a weakness either, as A.M. Architect’s lustrous set-pieces are appealing enough on their own terms to render the point moot. Check out “Albatross,” which breezily glides through a sunlit zone of stutter-funk melodies before slowing to a hazy close. Add a soul-jazz feel and sprinkle a dash of post-rock into the mix and you’re all set for dreamy fare such as “Next of Kin” and “Road to the Sun Part I.” When softly cooing female vocals ride a rhythmic wave in the track’s second part, you might find yourself reminded of the enticing vocal cuts Scott Herren occasionally works into his Prefuse 73 full-lengths—not bad company for A.M. Architect to keep. And you’ll have a tough time in this year or any year finding an instrumental hip-hop track more ravishing than “Upon,” as strong an argument for The Road to the Sun as could possibly be made. Each track bleeds almost immediately into the next, making the album feel like a strong club set where, egged on by an appreciative crowd, Chavez and Stanush can’t wait to dig into the next song the moment the previous one’s done. Don’t be surprised if, listening to it, you don’t feel the same.

Malcolm Stewart – Male hoopers represent!

One of the biggest higlights of Hoop Convergence 2009 for me was Malcolm’s workshop. I actually did it twice because I was that enthused. Nearly every person in the workshop invented a move that they had never done before. Malcolm pushed us all to find new ways to move with the hoop. If you haven’t seen it before, check out his performance group, Color Wheel.

Optimus Gryme – Eclipse LP

optimuszgryme

Optimus Gryme might be my favorite new artist. Optimus Gryme, aka. Charlie B just released his second album “The Eclipse LP”. I don’t often stumble across music that I dig as much as this album. This will likely be the soundtrack to my life for the next few months.

Shakti Sunfire on Hoop Convergence 2009

Thank you Shakti for such a thorough recount of the transpirings of HoopCon 2009. I’ve been fearful of starting to write about HoopCon because I have a feeling it might be as long as the novel she has written here.

Brecken. Wow. Brecken. Hands down Brecken takes the cake for repeatedly blowing my mind. Going back through notes of the weekend she appears on virtually every page. My aerial trainer/dance teacher once said; ‘there are no transitions in dance,’ and Brecken’s workshop and dance style both were testament to that statement. Breaking out of traditional horizontal vs. vertical plane structure, Brecken led us through a series of visualizations where the hoop was allowed to move ’sphere-like’ through space like a coin wobbles on the rim. Once the sphere passes through, say a vertical space, we worked to seize that opportunity to pass seamlessly into that movement plane and back. Rather than 2-D flowers and spirals I imagined my hoop carving 3 dimensional spheres in the etheric field. I am looking forward to more of the wealth of information and inspiration Brecken has to offer.

Rainbow Michael and I had some fun drawing patterns with our PSI Hoops at Hoop Convergence. I love the spiro-graph patterns that emerge from antispin flowers. Photographs by Trish Stolte.

HoopPath Retreat Tickets are now onsale!

Next stop on my hooping tour this year, the Hoop Path Retreat in Carrboro, NC. This will be my first time to the Hoop Path Retreat but I’ve taken many classes with Baxter. I feels like I’ll be coming home to my people. Not to mention, I get to kick it with Brecken for several more days. This little bad ass blew my mind everyday at Hoop Convergence and absorbing more from her at the HP retreat will be a treat.

If you would like to attend the 2009 Retreat, June 18th-21st, please write to ann@hooppath.com. The price for the ENTIRE weekend is 150.00! This price includes all workshops and events, but does not include lodging and meals.

Last year we sold out in 8 days so I highly recommend purchasing your ticket as soon as possible!
