Heather Crosby – Us

The ever amazing Heather Crosby writes:

Someone I have tremendous love for wrote a song for me a few months ago. It is his birthday today. Chicago is rainy and emotional outside and the light in my home is calming. History and future swirling around. It felt natural to play “the” song over and over and over on itunes today and hoop for hours. This is tape of the last 7 1/2 minutes of my session. Usually I’d edit it down to make it shorter, but I can’t bring myself to do it to this one…

Rainbow Michael – Triangulate the Circle

This is a great video from Rainbow Michael and I particularly dig the isolation to linear extensions that happen at :15 and 2:40. Great stuff. Rainbow Michael and Shakti Sunfire are also the two behind the best firehoops I’ve seen, the Magic Firehoop Pro (1″ Wicking). More on that to come next week.

Overhand thread the needle to underhand thread the needle

This is sloppy as hell but the elements are all there. This is an overhand thread the needle crossover 180 to a underhand thread the needle. Khan showed me it with poi then he and I talked it through to the hoop version. It’s much harder with hoops than poi. I need to clean up my underhand thread the needle before this will look any good.

Poppin all over the world…

5 beat turns – Sharna Rose

These moves kick my ass and I love it! I got the 3-beat down. Then last weekend I finally got the underhand 3-beat down. I can now 180 from an underhand 3-beat to an overhand 3-beat. When I first got the underhand 3-beat I was literally jumping up and down with excitement. That one move took over a month of head scratching for me. So I also have an overhand 5-beat variation in the bag but these turns that Sharna is doing look wicked hard. This is going to take a while :)

From Sharna:

Not sure what else to call them really….They are Safires’s 5 beat weave, done exactly as described in the other vid clip and then you do a Lucian turn (I call this turn a Lucian turn because he inspired this move for me). Ideally you then continue to the other side and 5 beat it. On my left I got lazy with the 5 beat and was rolling/throwing the hoop instead of grabbing with one hand so this side is way messier. It really tires my brain this combo :-)

Bend a New Hula Mecca? One Can Only Hoop!

090413-nwhg

I’m just getting settled back in from a terrific weekend at the NorthWest Hoop Gathering. The event caught the attention of the local newspaper and yesterday we were on the cover of the local section of The Bulletin.

Hoopers learn how to spin a hoop with their hands during a diagrammatic hooping class taught by Rich Porter on Saturday at the Evolution of Flow Northwest Hoop Gathering at Summit High School. About 100 hoop enthusiasts from as far away as the United Kingdom are in Bend this weekend for the three-day hooping event.

Thank you Doug and Dara for opening your home to Khan, Philo and I. You made our stay in Bend so comfortable and relaxed. I can’t think of a better way to be hosted for such a packed weekend.

Audio fondling your girlfriend

I’m diggin the new music from Panty Raid and excited about the upcoming release. Panty Raid is the collaboration project between Ooah and Marty Party. I’d describe it as hip hop with some West Coast wobble. Their website says, ” Audio fondling your girlfriend.”

The whole Panty Raid project is sorta weird. They’ve hijacked all the obnoxious symbols of main stream misogynistic hip hop. It feels very much like hipster appropriation. I can’t help it though, I like the music.

Dynamic Clarity Workshop – Northwest Hoop Gathering

I need to make this post quickly since I haven’t packed yet for tomorrow’s flight to Bend for the NorthWest Hoop Gathering and I spent WAY to long making a pamphlet for the workshop. In the spirit of open source and because I don’t think anyone takes a hoop class for content only, I have posted my workshop outline and the entire pamphlet for all those who can’t make it this weekend. Feel free to reproduce.

I’m so excited and can’t wait to see so many amazing hooper’s tomorrow! xoR

Printable JPGs posted below. If you would like a vector based file send me an email and I will send you the file directly as they are about 16mb.
