Hoop Collection

Miss Rosie posted a list of her hoop collection yesterday on her blog. Her approach to her collection is fairly similar to my own. She writes:

I make all the hoops I use except for my fire hoops. For personal use I have 4 sizes. My primary hoop is approx. 35″ diameter, 1/2″ 125 psi tubing (I actually have 5 of these that I use for multiple-hoops hooping). My small twins hoops (for hands) are the same tubing, but approx. 28″ diameter. When I need to get the foundations of a move (like chest hooping in my second direction) I practice with a beginner size hoop, approx. 40″ diameter, 3/4″ 160 psi tubing. I also have an intermediate size that’s 36″ diameter, 3/4″ 100 psi tubing, which I use to learn second direction moves AFTER I’ve gotten the move with the beginner hoop, and before I downsize to my 35″ hoop.

My own hoop collection:
(1) 3/4″ 160 psi 120″ (circumference) sanded black Gazelle a la Bax style
(1) 5/8″ HDPE 36″ taped hoop
(2) 1/2″ 125 psi 35″ taped doubles
(2) 1/2″ 125 psi 28″ taped mini doubles

My primary hoop is my 5/8″ HDPE. It’s super light and fast. This is what I jam with 75% of the time. The 3/4″ 100 psi is what I pick up for practicing chest hooping, especially second current. Then I have a big set of doubles and a mini set of doubles.

(2) Cosmic Fire – 22″ Mini Firehoops pro wick length

Thanks for these sizes since I’m in the midst of making some new core hooping hoops!

My collection has a lot more experimental sizes like:
    * 1/4″ 100 PSI (great for core hooping at a gathering when you’re sore, leg hooping or fast hooping)
    * 1/2″ rubber hose 13.5″ minis (my current favorites for super fast hand hooping that’s not painful)
    * 1″ heavy rubber hose 11″ (great for drilling on isolations and building wrist strength)
    * 1/2″ flimsy Home Depot tubing that make super light minis.

I’ve got lots of other more traditional sizes too, and some other crazy ones like a 1″ 100 PSI 35″ hoop that’s wrapped in hand-sown velvet.

I wonder if you could add the weight of your hoops as well. I know you had a fishing scale that you showed in another post. It’d be interesting to see how the different tapes affect the weight since you mentioned that the electrical tape I was using felt heavy.

I was going to pick a scale up soon, and then try to measure another hoop metric of revolutions per minute using the TapThis iPhone app. But I’ve found that the weight and size translate into how fast it rotates around your body, which can be measured by tapping on an iPhone whenever it crosses your stomach. Measuring three speeds of slow, normal and fast give a good idea of the hoop. I’ll have to do a full inventory and measurements since I’ve been wanting to do a video on that for a while.

I’ll try and get some weights. It would be useful info to add. I don’t have time until next week though.

Sounds like it was an intense weekend, and I can’t wait to see some video of some of the performances — if they exist. :)

I was able to pick up a nice digital fish scale this weekend, and I can now start doing a whole survey on my collection and play around with charting the Weight vs. Speed of each hoop’s diameter+thickness.

Hi Rich! I’ve read over your hoop collection and tubing comparison. The 5/8 hdpe – is it 151 psi? I’m debating between that one and the 3/4″ 123 psi. I’ve used the standards but prefer white hdpe after trying 195 and 105. I like to do breaks and isolation and like quickness. what do you recommend, 151 or 123?

The tube I use is 7/8″ O.D. 105 PSI HDPE. I purchase from McMaster Carr. You can go to their website. Select Tubing, then select single line, then Polyethlyne, then HDPE, then chose your diameter. Hope that helps.

    Hi Rich,
I’m sure it’s a really simple answer, but I was wondering where to find the corresponding connectors/couplers on the McMaster Carr site?

I’ve never actually ordered connectors off McMaster Carr. I get my connectors at the local hardware store. I have used tubing that the connectors would not fit. When this is the case, I order tubing from McMaster Carr that slips perfectly inside the hoop tubing. Pop-rivets hold the tubing nicely in place (thanks Shakti).

I’ve also used wooden dowel inserted into the tubing as a connector. When I did this I stuck a small tack nail through the hoop tube into the wooden dowel.
